I'm really excited to finally share this piece of art. I had the amazing opportunity to work on a game that called for the initial concept art for the Starhawk. Although that specific game is unreleased, the ship's design has moved forward to the game Star Wars Squadrons. Seeing it brought to life by the talented team there blew my mind. I had a lot of fun with this, and it saw many thumbnails, sketches, and revisions but finally it was approved.
Art Kohar was the first to take the concept and actually built it to be used in game. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/3de6mE Like he said; however, the game itself had never released and these assets were given to the motive team.
There's a few design notes I can share. I had one line of text from Star Wars Aftermath: Life Debt which spoke of the ship being like an axe blade cutting through space. In the end I think it was more or less kind exactly that. If you turn the ship on its side it's basically a hatchet. The other bit of lore I had to work with was it was created from the remains of Star Destroyers. I literally took apart models of Star Destroyers and fit them together in the silhouettes I had already explored. Additionally, it was my idea to have the tractor beams in the front of the Starhawk so that they can draw in enemy ships. I was thinking they would be used for rescue operations (locking them in and sending in specialists) or to act as a safehaven for ally ships while they draw the big guns away. The back part of the 'axeblade' is actually a series of docks for smaller ships to safely dock. I've since watched some of the videos from Squadrons and I love what they did with this idea. I think the best part about being a concept artist is to see your ideas be taken by extremely talented people and turned into something that feels real. That's my favorite part at least.
